Emerging in the early 20th century, Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) was born out of the realization
that people with disabilities deserved opportunities for meaningful work.
VR broadened its reach after focusing first on the rehabilitation of World War I veterans and adjusting to shifting demands and circumstances.
With its prohibition of disability-based discrimination and reiteration of the significance of vocational rehabilitation, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 in the United States was a crucial turning point. The cause was furthered by later legislation, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Today, VR is an international undertaking that provides individuals with impairments with specialized support, training, and job placement. It not only encourages people to pursue their job goals but also equality and diversity, reinforcing the idea that everyone, regardless of talent, deserves a shot.
